Indian traders protest SSB excesses
BANKE, NOV 05 - The business community of Rupaidiya, India, has called a two-day Rupaidiya banda on Thursday to protest the high-handedness of Indian authorities against Nepali consumers in the border area.
Indian traders alleged that Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Indian customs officials were extorting from Nepali consumers and tourists on various pretexts.
Rupaidiya Bazaar is a major marketplace for Nepalis living in bordering areas.
The protesters demanded that SSB and customs officials immediately stop extorting from Nepali customers on the pretext of security and customs check. They also warned of an indefinite general strike if the authorities failed to pay heed to their demands.
Rastriya Byapar Mandal, an organisation of businesspersons, called the banda. This is the first time the Indian business community has protested against its authorities on the issues of Nepali customers in the area.
