22 parties see red over UN call

Post Report

KATHMANDU, NOV 05 - The 22 ruling parties concluded on Thursday that United Nations Secretary General Ban ki-Moon’s recent call at the Security Council for a national unity government was an act of ‘blatant intervention’ in Nepal’s internal affairs.

At the day’s meeting, the parties decided to shoot a letter to the world body against its ‘meddlesome’ act.

The meeting chaired by Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal also asked as to why the UN had not called for a national unity government when the UCPN (Maoist) was in power.

“We have been trying to bring in other parties to the government. Nepali people and parties have the right to put in place the government of their choice,” a statement issued at the end of the meeting read, appealing to the Maoists to join the government.

“Ban’s expression is a blatant intervention in domestic affairs. Forming a government is our task and not the UN’s,” said Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party Leader Ram Chandra Poudel after the meeting.

“The Maoist party has taken the parliament hostage by obstructing its sessions.  We decided to draw the attention of Constituent Assembly (CA) Chairman Subas Chandra Nembang to this issue,” added Poudel.

“Democratic norms and values do not allow the party, which has its weapons, army and paramilitary structure, to lead a government,” the meeting concluded.

It urged the government and the Maoists to expedite the process of integration and rehabilitation of ex-Maoist combatants.

The ruling coalition took the occasion to urge the Maoist leadership to call off its nationwide protest and sit for talks. The meeting instructed the government to take all po-ssible measures to maintain law and order.
