Not much to find funny

AUG 03 - In 2005, Ekta Kapoor, known for her production of daily soaps and family films, tried her hands at something very different with Kya Kool Hain Hum, a sex comedy which changed her goody-goody image. I did watch the film on DVD (a ‘hall print’ version), and although I hardly remember many things from it, I can definitely say that the first part was much better than its recently released sequel Kya Super Kool Hain Hum. Not that the first part was something great or unbelievable, but it was funny, at least (I think!).
Adi (Tusshar) and Sid (Ritesh Deskhmukh) are best of friends, who share a flat, their electricity bills and even their bad fortunes. While Adi is a struggling actor, Sid wants to become an award winning DJ someday. Their bad times take them to Goa as the two follow the tracks of Adi’s soulmate Simran (Neha Sharma) who, as predicted by a tarot card reader, can “change his life”. All Goa does is add more stupid and unnecessary stupid characters—like 3G Baba (Chunky Pandey) and Trippy (Kavin Dave)—to the film.
Director Sachin Yardi has failed to live up to the expectations generated among audiences by the film’s immense publicity. Despite being a ‘comedy film’, Kya Super Kool Hain Hum hardly delivers any punches capable of tickling your funny bone. Instead plenty of cheesy dialogues: What are you doing inside the fridge??—I am chilling, to take just one example, make the film sound silly, and do nothing to add a comic quotient to it. The gay jokes in the film, which have already been heard hundreds of times before, don’t help much, and Tusshar is as bad here as he is in almost all of his other films.
Talking about the positives, Deskmukh’s performance and a few songs, which are very well choreographed, are something to look up to. Among the leading ladies, Sarah Jane Dias (Anu) looks pretty, and acts better than Neha Sharma. Anupam Kher is completely wasted in a stupid character: that of a billionaire who has a bizarre hobby of collecting Bollywood trivia; Vidya Balan’s red blouse from The Dirty Picture for instance (Really?!!).
It is better if you watch a comedy film being broadcast on cable TV than waste your money on this flick. It is simply not worth it!
