Gold tally seven, Bista makes history

There is no denying that Deepak Bista is the most celebrated Nepali player in recent years. But now his popularity has soared even higher. On Monday, Bista won a record four consecutive South Asian Games (SAG) taekwondo gold medal in the 11th SAG
in Dhaka to become the first athlete in the region to achieve the mark.Bista had equalled legendary runner Baikuntha Manandhar’s record of three gold medals in the last edition at the 10th SAG in Colombo. For his fourth, Bista outplayed Bhutan’s Thinley 17-9 in the below 87 kg category.
Taekwondo added one more gold immediately after Bista’s win through former SA Games bronze medallist Ayesha Shakya in the below 53 kg category. With the five gold won today, Nepal’s tally on the second last day of SAG stands at seven gold, nine silver and 18 bronze medals.
