Former king draws crowd in Panauti

POST REPORT

KAVRE, FEB 08 -
Former King Gyanendra Shah visited the Makar Mela at Paunauti of Kavre district on Monday.

He also performed ablution by sprinkling water at Tribenighat, a confluence of three streams, and worshiped various deities. A large number of people  gathered in the area to see the deposed king. Some offered him garlands and also appealed to him to maintain peace and security.

Talking to mediapersons, the former king said he wished peace, security and happiness in the country. He listened to the people, while some royalists chanted pro-monarchy slogans. The former monarch donated Rs. 100,000 each to two Mahayagyas organised by Maiti Old Age Home and Indreswhor College. Shah’s personal secretary Sagar Timilsina said the former monarch visited the Mela as a common citizen.  “There was no special invitation. The visit was purely personal and religious,” he added.

This is the first time any member of the royal family has visited the month-long Makar Mela that occurs every twelve years.
