Media fraternity, parties shocked
KATHMANDU, FEB 07 -
Condolence and condemnations flooded as news of the assassination of Jamim Shah, President and Managing Director of Space Time Network, spread like wildfire. Media fraternity and political parties deplored the incident and demanded an immediate probe into the incident to bring the culprits to book.
Shah was shot in Lazimpat area in broad daylight. He subsequently succumbed to bullet injuries while being rushed to hospital.
Nepal Media Society (NMS), an umbrella organisation of Nepali media fraternity, said the entire private media fraternity was shocked by the death of Shah, who pioneered Nepal’s media industry. “We condemn the incident in which Shah was brutally killed in Lazimpat, one of the Capital’s busiest areas, in broad daylight,” said NMS in a press statement.
Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) said it was shocked to hear about Shah’s death. Pointing at the Capital’s lax law and order, FNJ demanded that the government initiate immediate action to bring the culprits to book.
Condemning the incident, Television Broadcasters Nepal (TBN) said it was absurd that neither the security agencies nor the government had come up with any official statement on the incident. Shah was also the chairman of TBN.
“If the government fails to take immediate steps, we will be forced to run a campaign to press the government in this regard,” the statement read.
Advertising Association of Nepal (AAN) said it was unfortunate that someone heading a free press had been attacked and murdered. “We are shocked by the incident,” it said.
Condemning the incident, UCPN (Maoist) Spokesman Dinanath Sharma attributed the death to “government failure to maintain law and order. There could be a grand design behind the attack,” said Sharma. “The government should make public the culprits.”
A large number of journalists the Post contacted for comments said they were devastated by Shah’s death and the manner of the murder. “He was a man of humility. He preferred to maintain a low profile, though he led a big media house,” said a senior journalist who had worked with Shah.
“I was shocked when I heard the news. The country has lost a true nationalist,” said Shambu Shrestha, Chairman of Gorakhpatra Sansthan. “The incident shows that the country’s law and order situation is in serious disarray.” Condemning the incident, NC spokesman Arjun Narsingh K.C. said the government must initiate a probe at the earliest to nab Shah’s murderers. “This shows that the country is heading towards lawlessness,” he said.
Senior Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party leader Hridyash Tripathi condemned the attack and termed the incident serious.
