Tongue-twistingly good: Kru Thai

Amrita Gurung

NOV 19 - It’s often said that the old restaurants are the safest bets for good food, if one isn’t taken in by alluring ambiences of newer, fancier places first. Thamel’s Krua Thai Nepal Restaurant and Bar has been serving Thai cuisine fir over a decade now, and the consistency of good food is proof enough, that the saying is not just a saying.

Established in 1998, the restaurant was opened at the time when there was only one Thai restaurant in the capital, with the intention of introducing authentic Thai cuisine to a Nepali clientele. In order to give an authentic taste of Thailand, the owners flew in a Thai chef from the country to not only woo the clientele with mouth-watering dishes but also, to train other staff.

Thai dishes are aplenty in many of Kathmandu’s restaurants nowadays but none can equal the colossal menu of Kura Thai’s authentic dishes. The restaurant continues to surprise — and very pleasantly so at that — by adding new recipes and revising the menu twice a year.

The restaurant simply planned, with three different sections. There is a bar hall, an open terrace, and a separate dining hall for bigger groups and private parties. Portraits and landscapes of Thailand rule the walls and table cloths and even the curtains cover the windows as they might in a house in old Siam.

The menu is displayed on the walls so that even first-timers can quickly and easily decide what they want. The price is reasonable, the menu ample, and even very similar looking dishes taste astonishingly different

The Tom Yam Koong Soup is a fantastic starter; the hot and sour soup comes with small pieces of boiled prawns. The lemon grass is aromatic and makes you feel warm from the inside. Koong Shub Pang Thod, a plate of golden fried prawns, simply melts in your mouth, the spicy accompanying pickle leaving a sharp tingle on your tongue; a plate simply isn’t enough. Pad Thai, a plate of noodles prepared is prepared in oyster sauce and is sweet and hot, leaving your tastebuds debating which flavours they prefer.

Krua Thai is the place to go for a proper oriental lunch or dinner. It opens from 10 in the morning till lat at night, and sweet, sour, or spicy, it has a menu for each of your palate’s moods.
