Trade union shuts Dharan industries

PRADIP MAYANGBO

DHARAN, NOV 19 - UCPN (Maoist)-aligned workers’ union—All Nepal Trade Union—shut down Dharan Industrial Area indefinitely on Thursday.

Twenty industries inside the industrial area have halted operation and production and distribution of various commodities, including daily essentials, has totally stopped.

Accusing the management of four pharmaceutical industries, which remained closed since the past 17 days, Maoist workers called the industrial area closure to exert pressure for fulfilment of the demands of agitating workers.

Employees of these pharmaceutical industries have been agitating with their 14-point demand. They have been demanding salary hike as per the Labour Act and permanent job status among others.

According to Dibyaraj Adhikari, the administrative officer of the industrial area, all industries, including Dharan Dairy, Surya Metal, Prity Valve Industry, Gorkha Feed

and Baba Shiva Packaging among others, haveclosed.

Eighty-two employees working in these four pharmaceutical industries—Manoj Chemicals, Makalu Herbs Company, Shiva Pharmaceutical and Manoj Pharamceutical—padlocked the industries as the managements turned down their demand.
