‘Prevent child abuse’
KATHMANDU, NOV 19 - Children from various schools voiced their opinions and their needs on child rights on Thursday and called for laws that should be immediately amended in the Constitution for the prevention of child abuse.
The joint programme by 22 organisations saw the children highlighting their situation across the country through various creative forms such as dances, songs, poems, and dramas.
“We want to make education free for all until grade twelve and have the same curriculum in all schools so that there will be fair competition among people,” said Pampha Bhusal, Constituent Assembly Member.
The programme included the issues of HIV/AIDS among children, sexual abuse, domestic violence, and illiteracy. The children also presented a document to the lawmakers present that included points like free education, employment for at least one member in a family, and same curriculum in all the schools.
“We hope that the government will listen to our voices and make efforts to protect child rights,” said Pratima Bhattarai of the Bhrikuti Bal Club.
The United Nations Convention of on the Rights of the Child was signed this day 20 years ago in 1989. The Universal Child Rights Day will be celebrated on Friday across the country with a special focus on the National Plan of Action for Children Nepal (2004-2014).
