Districts hit by cash crunch

PALPA, SEP 21 - The nationwide shortage of notes has badly affected the normal life of the people. Palpa district receives about Rs. 350 million in remittances monthly, but people have not been able to get the money sent back by their relatives due to the shortage.

Teachers and civil servants have not got their salary right before Dashain. Even private organisations have failed to pay the salaries of their staff.

Hari Krishna Sharma related to an non-governmental organisation United Campaign for Children said how he could be able to provide to his staff as the bank was not providing money.

Reports from Myagdi are similar. The banks that are involved in the government's transactions have made half payment of salary to their employees. The banks had started giving any payment for the last one week.

But assistant manger of Nepal Bank's Beni branch Suruya Prasad Baral said they were making payment out of Rs. 80 million delivered by Nepal Rastra Bank on Sunday.

Rastriya Banijya Bank (RBB), Nilgiri Development Bank, Machhapuchchhre Bank and some ooperatives have also started make payments by getting money from NRB's office in Pokhara.

In Sarlahi, there was no crowd at NBL's Sarlahi branch as the bank lacked money to give to depositors and government employees. NRB has not made payment against cheques of more than 10,000 people on Sunday.

The bank said that it had already made payments of Rs, 100 million and it was demanding an dditional Rs. 100 million.
