Through the eyes of a woman
KATHMANDU, SEP 20 -
Laxmi Rai, a woman who earns a living as a stone crusher, became a major point of reference in the anecdotes shared at the launch of Ashwini Koirala’s book Uni. Her story seemed inspiring to such an extent that no speakers could leave without relating her story to those who had gathered at the Sarwanam Theatre auditorium to witness the official launch of the book on Wednesday.
Based on a number of such interviews, Uni is a compilation of the many stories Koirala, a journalist with Saptahik, has gathered over the past 15 years. The 40 women whose stories have been compiled in the new book come from various walks of life. Be it the stories of actresses Karishma Manandhar and Manisha Koirala, or singer Ani Choying Dolma and beautician Kamala Shrestha, Koirala has attempted to present these women’s views of and perspectives on society through his book .
The book also tells the tales of ordinary women including Sabitra Shrestha, a home-based worker; Soni Shrestha, wife of a micro-bus driver; and Asha Chhetri, a woman who lost her life to HIV, among others.
The book was launched jointly by Karuna Kunwar, Sama Banu, Parvati Sharma and Menuka Thapa—four of the interviewees whose stories Koirala has included in the book . Guests attending the launch also included media personality Bijaya Kumar Pandey and senior journalist Guna Raj Luitel.
Speaking at the programme, Luitel praised the book and the writer for giving space to stories that would otherwise have remained untold. “The characters presented in the book have made it easier for all of us to understand society, and the position women find themselves in in the present scenario,” he said. “The book inspires ordinary people to reflect on themselves and realise their own potentials,” Luitel added.
Pandey also praised the subject matter Koirala has taken up in the book , applauding the journalist’s attempt at presenting stories by women from various realms of life. “The beauty of existence lies in diversity,” he said.
