Nepal-US military drill kicks off today
KATHMANDU, SEP 10 -
A Nepal-US joint military exercise is all set to start in Pokhara from Monday. The six-day humanitarian operation, “Pacific Angel Nepal”, will include exercises in medicine, optometry and construction and will also host presentations from experts on various subject matters.
According to a statement issued by the US Embassy on Sunday, approximately 150 Nepali and American soldiers, military doctors from Australia and Mongolia and local non-governmental organisations will participate in the joint exercise. The US military has been hosting Operation Pacific Angel with militaries of the Asia Pacific region since 2007. This is the first time the operation is going to be held in Nepal.
The operation is aimed at helping improve the health and quality of life of Nepali communities and enhancing regional cooperation, stability and security, said the statement.
US assistant secy arriving
The US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs, Robert O Blake Jr, is arriving in Kathmandu on Monday for a two-day visit.
According to the State Department, in Kathmandu, Blake will meet with Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Chief of Nepal Army Gaurav Sumsher Rana and other government officials to discuss a range of bilateral and regional issues. “He will also meet business leaders, Tibetan community representatives, civil society leaders and human rights activists. Assistant Secretary Blake will also hold a press conference at the Hyatt Hotel,” said a statement.
