Protests against fuel price hike linger
KATHMANDU, SEP 10 -
Nine student unions close to various opposition parties demonstrated in front of the Nepal Oil Corporation central office in Babarmahal, Kathmandu, on Sunday demanding that the recent hike in fuel prices be rolled back.
Scores of student s joined the demonstrations organised by the Nepal Students’ Union (NSU), the All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (Fifth/ Sixth), and the National Democratic Students’ Union. The protest was held from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. They shouted slogans demanding action against officials involved in corruption, controlling of irregularities in the corporation and scrapping of the monopolistic agreement with the Indian Oil Corporation.
“Frequent hikes in petroleum prices have hit student s and commoners hard. The move should be withdrawn at any cost,” said NSU coordinator Ranjeet Karna. The student activists have threatened sterner protests if the government fails to address their demands.
The agitating student s have accused the government of betraying them by not implementing the agreement reached with them earlier. Three months ago, the government agreed to provide relief packages to student s and the poor, which has yet to be implemented.
