KATHMANDU, SEP 10 -

Electronics dealers have been making feverish preparations for the pre- Dashain festival shopping spree. Sellers of major brands like Samsung, LG, Sharp, Sony, Panasonic, Yasuda and Philips, among others, are stocking up for the festive season and planning strategies to overtake their competitors.

Dashain is the time when Nepalis shop as if there is no tomorrow. And electronics dealers are leaving no stone unturned to cash in on the season when consumers rush to empty their pockets.

“For Nepalis, Dashain is the time when they buy something or the other. And we are gearing up to offer the best products to our customers,” said Binay Tripathi, deputy general manager at Him Electronics, the

sole authorised distributor of Samsung in Nepal.

He added that the company would be introducing a new range of products in almost all the segments. “In fact, we will start introducing new products from this week itself. New Samsung products will hit the stores before people start their festive shopping ,” he said.

There will be new range of LED and LCD TVs, refrigerators, digital cameras and washing machines from Samsung too delight festive shoppers. According to the company, the new products possess unique features which will make consumers feel that the Dashain shopping season was worth the wait.

During other times of the year, electronics dealers see rise in sales of seasonal products. However, the case is totally different during Dashain and Tihar. “As people buy anything from cameras to televisions and home theatres to washing machines, sales during this period make up 35 percent of our annual sales,” said Tripathi. Meanwhile, another major electronics dealer CG Electronics, which markets products from Korean brand LG, has been filling its shelves with the latest products in a bid to attract festive shoppers. According to Purshottam Bhandari, manager, LG at CG Electronics, they will be introducing a new range of LED, LCD and 3D televisions.

“The market for audio-video products revs up significantly during Dashain and Tihar. This is why we have increased our focus on this range,” he said. The company is also launching two new models of home theatre system and a new range in the refrigerator segment. CG Electronics is expecting a significant rise in sales of its premium products as the trend of upgrading electronic items has gone up in recent days.

The company has already started seeing a rise in inquiries at all the LG showrooms across the country. “Footfall has increased at all our showrooms, even though there hasn’t been a matching rise in sales. People are eager to know about the new products and schemes being introduced during the festivals,” he said.

SG Global, a subsidiary of the Shanker Group and the sole authorised distributor of Sharp in Nepal, is also planning to come up with a new range of LCD and LED televisions. The major launch from Sharp will be 29-inch LCD and LED TVs which are quite new for the domestic market. “The domestic market features LCD and LEDs in 24, 26 or 32 inches. This is why we are planning to introduce a 29-inch TV,” said Akhil Gupta, director of SG Global. The company is confident that these products from Sharp will become successful in attracting people as TVs of this size are not available in the market.

Consumers will also see new arrivals of home appliances from Sharp like water purifiers and stand freezers. According to Gupta, the company plans to double sales from last year’s figure.
