PALPA, SEP 09 -

Participants of the Nepali Congress ’ (NC) Western Regional Mahasamiti gathering have suggested that the party move ahead in unity.

At the gathering that concluded in Palpa on Saturday, the participants urged the NC’s top leadership to lead the consensus government as per the five-point agreement, after toppling the Baburam Bhattarai-led government. They also urged leaders to end factional politics. The gathering stressed the need for the party to pick a candidate for the prime ministerial post after an environment conducive for a consensus government is created and end the country’s current political stalemate.

“The NC-led government must be formed after toppling the Bhattarai-led government and bringing talks between the four parties to a logical conclusion,” said Hari Prasad Nepal, a Mahasamiti member.

Nepal said disputed issues should be resolved immediately, even through a referendum. In response, NC Vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel committed to move ahead united and said that the gathering had strongly pushed the agenda of democratic socialism to transform Nepali society.

In Birgunj, NC General Secretary Krishna Sitaula said the Constituent Assembly can be revived for a short period if the parties reach a deal on the contentious issues of the new constitution. He, however, underscored the need to hold parliamentary elections by mid-May. Sitaula also blamed Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai as a shameless politician.
