KATHMANDU, AUG 18 - Dr Prakash Sayami has been appointed as the dean at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) Institute of Medicine following a six-day long hunger strike staged by Dr Govinda KC ,  against political influence in appointment of officials at TUTH.

After the appointment, Dr KC broke his fast as he drank juice offered to him by his patients – Indra Chepang and Prithvi Bishwokarma. Dr KC, chief of the Orthopaedic Department, has been taken to Coronary Care Unit (CCU) as the 6-day long fast took a toll on his health.

It was learnt that the PM had recommended the name of Dr Prakash Sayami as the dean. Dr Sayami is one of the senior-most professors at the TUTH and a revered figure among TUTH staffers.

Dr KC restarted his fast-unto-death strike on Monday demanding the key posts in the TUTH be filled on the basis of merit or seniority and not political appointment.

However, the spirit of the 55-year-old senior orthopedist remained ever strong in his fight against political infiltration in the institute and finally his fortitude prevailed as the appointment was made on the basis of seniority and experience.

It was learnt that Minister of Education Dina Nath Sharma had arrived at TUTH premises to convince Dr KC to break his fast.
