Mentally ill woman confined for 18 yrs
OKHALDHUNGA, AUG 16 - Man Maya Tamang of Kuntadevi VDC-4 in the district has been living in confinement for the past 18 years.
Man Maya’s son Dipesh said they were forced to lock up his mentally ill mother after they could not get her treated for want of money. “We still have hopes of her getting proper treatment. However, we do not have money,” he said.
Man Maya’s husband Til Bahadur said he spent around Rs 300,000 for her treatment, but to no avail. “I married another woman after she showed no signs of getting better even after taking her to various hospitals,” he said. Til Bahadur is a retired army man.
He said he was forced to lock her up after she started attacking people.
Man Maya, 51, needs a person when she wants to defecate and she is offered food in confinement.
Family members said produce from their farmland hardly lasts three months and pension that Til Bahadur receives is spent in running the household.
Dipesh said they were struggling to eke out a living, let alone managing for money for her treatment.
Dipesh said he will take her mother to a hospital of anyone offers the family some financial aid.
