Britain’s Andy Murray made a winning return to Centre Court after his Wimbledon final defeat as the world number four beat Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the Olympics on Sunday.
Murray was back in action on the All England Club’s showpiece arena exactly three weeks after crying tears of frustration following his four-set defeat against Roger Federer in his maiden Wimbledon final.
The 25-year-old set up a last 32 clash with Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen or India’s Somdev Devvarman. Murray played the first full match under the Centre Court roof when he defeated Wawrinka in a five-set classic in the fourth round in 2009 and the pair had to duel indoors again after hail and rain forced the arena to be covered on Sunday. The Scot had lost his first match since the Wimbledon final when he and brother Jamie were beaten in the doubles on Saturday.
‘Mystery woman’ was cast member of opening ceremony
A day after India’s angry protest over an unidentified lady gatecrashing into the contingent’s march past at the Opening Ceremony, London Games Organising Committee Chief Sebastian Coe today said that the “ mystery woman” was just a cast member of the gala show and there was no security risk to the team. An angry Indian acting Chef-de-Mission P K Muralidharan Raja had shot off a letter on this embarrassing issue to the London Games organisers last night in protest against the incident even as media reports claimed to have identified the “mystery woman”.
Coe sought to cool down the frayed tempers among the Indians, saying that he would meet with the Indian delegation to discuss the
matter. “She was a cast member who clearly got slightly overexcited.
She shouldn’t have been there,” Coe said. Coe insisted that the unidentified woman posed no danger to the Indian team or the proceedings because, as a cast member for the opening ceremony, she had to go through all the security checks that everyone else does to get into the Olympic Stadium.
US stars rip France in opener
Kevin Durant scored 22 points to lead the United States team of NBA stars over France 98-71 on Sunday in their opening game of the Olympic men’s basketball tournament. Durant, the reigning NBA scoring champion, produced two electrifying back-to-back slam dunks in the early minutes — one off a half-court-length pass from LeBron James in a game that became a romp after the opening quarter. The American NBA stars greeted US First Lady Michelle Obama after the game, each player and coach receving a hug in congratulation for the victory.
Brazil fightback to beat Belarus 3-1
Neymar showed just why the world’s top football clubs want to sign him with a virtuoso display as Brazil came from a goal behind to beat Belarus 3-1 at a packed Old Trafford on Sunday.
Spanish giants Barcelona are the latest leading club to have expressed an interest in the 20-year-old and it was easy to see why as, thanks largely to Neymar’s brilliance, they qualified for the quarter-finals of the Olympic tournament with a match to spare.
Belarus took a shock lead in front of a crowd of more than 66,000 at the home ground of English giants Manchester United. But from then on Brazil battled back in this Group C clash, with Neymar setting the seal on a superb display with a 65th minute free-kick bent over the wall and beyond the reach of diving Belarus keeper Aleksandr Gutor. Brazil were down when Belarus’s Renan Bardini Bressan opened the scoring with an eighth minute header.
