KATHMANDU, JUL 30 - Taking serious exception to the government decision to recommend an electoral ordinance to the President, the CPN-UML termed the move a "ploy to prolong the caretaker government's term".
A meeting of the UML Parliamentary Department on Sunday said that the government's attempt to endorse poll-related ordinances was an "ill-intended move".
"By introducing electoral ordinances the government is creating an illusion of holding the elections in November and continuing its tenure," said Bharat Mohan Adhikari, UML leader.
Issuing a press release after the meeting, Adhikari said that the amendments to conflicting electoral laws made no sense, given the government's failure to amend the Interim Constitution.
The meeting called on all the political parties to concentrate on forging consensus over contentious issues, including a new power deal and a way-out of the current political deadlock.
The meeting concluded that the prime minister's "forceful bid" to hold fresh elections would invite serious political confrontation in the days ahead and thus asked the government to come up with a compromise instead.
