Nepal end in bitter note
KATHMANDU, JUN 23 -
Nepal ended their AFC U-22 qualifiers campaign on a bitter note going down 3-0 against Jordan at the Dashrath stadium on Friday.
Nepal’s hopes had gone up in smokes soon after Yemen had settled for a 1-1 draw against Uzbekistan in the early match of the day. Today’s result meant Jordan moved into the second round with nine points, while Uzbekistan, who are on seven points, still have to wait for the final match between Yemen and Bangladesh on Sunday to confirm their berth.
With four points, Yemen can still spoil the Uzbeks party if they manage a comfortable win over Bangladesh. Nepal exited the tournament with three points.
With nothing to play for after Yemen’s draw with Uzbekistan, the hosts appeared sluggish against Jordan, who were desperate to move though with a perfect record.
And they played accordingly, sending shivers down Nepal’s spine every time they attacked. Hosts Nepal were lucky to escape a series of attacks from Jordan in the opening 30 minutes, with most of attempts going inches off the target, but Mus’ab Allahham 40th minute strike broke the deadlock. Mahmoud Za’tara made it
2-0 in the 75th minute and Allahham scored his second to seal the win five minutes later.
