China pledges security apparatus worth Rs 20m to Nepal

KATHMANDU, Feb 09 - Home Minister Bhim Rawal, who is currently on a six-day official visit to China, and Chinese Minister for Public Security Meng Jianzhu signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday.

The memorandum was signed during a meeting between the two leaders at Great Hall of the People’s in Chinese capital Beijing on Monday. The Chinese Ministry for Public Security, in the memorandum, has pledged assistance worth Rs. 20 million to Nepal for the improvement of police administration. Chinese government will provide security apparatus as part of the assistance.

In the agreement, the two neighbouring countries have vowed to increase friendly ties based on mutual respect and support each other in controlling border crimes.

During the meeting, Minister Rawal expressed Nepal’s commitment to ‘one China policy’ and assured the Chinese minister that Nepali government will not allow anti-china activities in Nepali soil.

Lauding Nepal’s one-China policy, Minister Meng thanked his Nepali counterpart on the role played by Nepal in Tibet’s security.

Nepali Ambassador to China Tanka Karki said the Chinese government has given priority to the proposal of extradition treaty. “Though the treaty would not be signed this time around, the discussion on the same would continue,” said Karki. “China forwarded the proposal so as to make it easier to extradite those engaged in anti-china activities.”

Ambassador Karki said that China has agreed to send a study team for the construction of Armed Police Force Training Academy. “The two leaders discussed mainly on the management and control of cross-border crimes and improvement of Nepali security force, among other issues.”

Beijing had been expressing concern over Tibetan refugees' anti-China protests in Nepal and urged it to put “extra efforts” to curb such activities.

Home Minister Bhim Rawal had left for China on Feb 6, leading an eight-member delegation including  heads of the security agencies—Nepal Police IGP Ramesh Chand Thakuri, Armed Police Force IGP Sanat Kumar Basnet and National Investigation Department Chief Ashok Dev Bhatta.

Prior to this visit, the Home Minister had left for India some three weeks back.
