Public schools shut for second consecutive day
KATHMANDU, Feb 08 - Public schools across the country has been shut down on Monday as well due to educational strike called by the Relief Teachers’ Central Struggle Committee (RTCSC).
The teachers recruited under the relief quota have been agitating for the last six months, demanding facilities and salaries on a par with permanent teachers together with promotion.
Monday is the second day of the three-day education strike called by the agitating teachers.
“We were compelled to call the educational strike as the government did not pay heed to our demands,” said Kaman Singh Lama, general secretary of RTCSC. “We want the government to address our issues within three days; otherwise, we will organise stringent protests.”
The committee has been demanding that all relief quota teachers be made permanent through internal competition without age limits.
According to MoE data, over 38,000 relief teachers were appointed during the Maoist insurgency to cope with increasing number of students in community schools in the Western Tarai.
