Nepal-India water talks, Joint panel on Pancheshwor
Kathmandu, Nov 21 - The two-day secretary-level meeting of Indo-Nepal Joint Committee on Water Resources (JCWR) started in Pokhara on Friday.
The first day saw the formation of a joint committee that will submit its report on Saturday on the constitution of a Pancheshwor Development Authority, a body that will expedite work on the Pancheshwor Multipurpose Project. During an earlier JCWR meeting in New Delhi, Nepal and India had failed to form the authority due to various differences.
“If both sides agree on the committee’s report, then we will have a starting point for the Pancheshwor Development Authority,” said Energy Secretary Shanker Prasad Koirala. Inundation caused by the India-built Laxmanpur Dam figured in the meeting and India proposed a committee to look into the issue. The Indian side demanded security for its team surveying on the proposed Koshi High Dam in Sunsari district. Nepal agreed to set up two police stations at the survey site.
